[Music] Coming up on Toronto Today. Rob Ford loses his seat as mayor. What next? Toronto celebrates the Argos Grey Cup win with a parade. Cairo protesters clash with the police. Happy Tuesday everyone and welcome to Toronto Today. I'm Sarah Warren and I'm Maria Saf. Today is quite a day for Toronto as mayor Rob Ford was removed from office yesterday. This has left many Torontonians wondering what the future will hold for the city. And on a lighter note, the streets of downtown are filled in celebration of the Argos victory. It's been over 24 hours since Toronto found out that it is without a mayor and many are still in shock. Even though it's likely that that he will soon be packing his bags. Mayor Rob Ford was hard at work this morning. Dana Roberts is at city hall with more on the impact that this will have on the city. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford attended city council's routine meeting early this morning even though he lost his seat as mayor. Ford was found to have contravened the municipal conflict of interest act when he spoke and voted regarding his own failure to reimburse over three thousand dollars in donations to his private football foundation. Counselor Georgio Mameliti who resigned from Ford's executive committee, spoke in support of the mayor. I'm not going to pin it just on the mayor. I think politics has a huge role to play in this and I think that some people chose to take their fight into the courtroom and I think everyone's to blame. But what exactly does this mean for the city of Toronto? Politics professor Neil Tomlinson speaks about the significance of this story. Well it's pretty big deal. It's not very often that you see a mayor of a major city in Canada removed from office by a judge. The judge I don't think really had much choice in this matter. The case is very straightforward. The judgment is very straightforward, very, well written, very clear. And he basically said you know all he had to do was repay the $3100 in the first place. That would have been the end of it. He didn't. All he had to do was abstain from voting. It would have passed anyway. The motion. He didn't do that either and so therefore he's in trouble downtown. Torontonians have mixed reactions. He is guilty, yes agreed. But it's too harsh. I think it's about time. I think rob ford has kind of disgraced the city, I'm hoping that there will be another by-election. I really believe in democracy and people's voice being heard. Mayor Rob Ford has been given two weeks to file his appeal. If that appeal is not granted he will be removed from office on December 10th. Reporting from city hall. Dana Roberts, Toronto Today. We've just learned that Ford's application for stay of decision, will be heard on December 5th and today Mayor Ford will be holding a press conference today at 3:30. We'll have more on the Rob Ford controversy and what's next for the city later in the show. And now for our other big story. Two days after winning the Grey Cup, the Toronto Argonauts celebrated with a full out victory parade this morning. Harlan Namarovsky has more on this story. [Applause] The victory celebration has begun. Football fans all around this great nation have come to Toronto to cheer on the Argonauts. It's a, it's a great feeling man. It's my hometown. I got all my boys, got my teammates here, got my coaches with me. So it couldn't be any better. Man it means we're back! To be in the city of champions you know what I mean. They came out they supported us. We put the product to the field. Maybe we won this thing so keep supporting us. Toronto we keep doing that and keep on getting champions. It's not just the players who are happy about the win. The execs are happy too. The CFL is called the Canadian, it could be called a community football league. This is about community and about family and it's why our players are so accessible to the community. It's what makes us sets us apart from the NHL and the NBA and Major League Baseball. It's been great. The local organizing committee has done a phenomenal job. You know there were people who came into the city, but the excitement of the city. I'm happy for the Argos and happy for the people of Toronto. It's been a long time coming for them and it's great for football. It's great for the CFL. The Grey Cup has finally come home here in Toronto and right behind me here is the Grey Cup. This parade will last all the way until Nathan Philips Square. It started here at Yonge and Wellington and the parade continues. As it's a big win for Toronto. I'm Harlan Niemers reporting for Toronto Today. And we'll have more on Grey Cup celebrations later in sports. A funeral will be held today for an elementary school teacher who was killed in a hit-and-run accident last week. 35 year old Tom Sanson was riding his bike when he was struck by two vehicles on Lansdowne Avenue and Davenport Road last Friday. The driver of the first vehicle did not remain at the scene of the accident. Samson later died in hospital. 22 year old Miguel Oliveira is charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death. He was he was released on bail Monday. Ontario's Special Investigation units is being called to investigate an accident. An eight-year-old boy was hit by a police cruiser in Brampton. The young boy was struck by a pilgrim police cruiser on Monday. He was later taken to Branson Civic hospital to be treated for a broken leg. Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident. Witnesses who were at the scene are asked to contact investigators. Charges won't be laid against a Durham regional police officer who shot a teenager holding an imitation firearm in July. The officer confronted the 17 year old suspect when he arrived in response to an armed robbery call outside a veterinary clinic. The officer took fire when the teenager pulled out a fake gun. The boy shot was shot eight times. The Special Investigations Unit says the shooting was justified. As there was no reason to believe the gun was not real. In international news, Gaza residents gathered today to show their support for Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas Bitsui recognized as a U.N officer of server state. Residents say that a vote in their favor would help obtain rights for Palestinians. They say it is a positive thing for the Palestinian benefit. To get their rights all the Palestinian people. Young, old, children, and factions support the president to get out our rights back in Jerusalem. Religious and political representatives for Palestine also voiced their support. They say the step to go to the United Nations is to tell the whole world. Friends, neutrals, or those against their Palestinian rights to tell them that they have to be committed to have a Palestinian state and with the freedom of the Palestinian people who suffered a lot due to the occupation. Israel and the United States have objected the bid over concerns that Palestine would be admitted to the international criminal court where they would find complaints against Israel. The vote will take place on Thursday. Former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's body was dug up last night from his concrete mausoleum in Ramallah in the west bank. He was reburied after murder investigators collected samples to see if he was poisoned. The samples will be shipped overseas to be tested for poisons in a process that will take about nine months Arafat died in 2004 at the age of 75. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a failed attempt to assassinate Pakistani Hamid Mir. The high-profile news anchor covered the Taliban shooting of the 15-year-old girl, Malala Yusuf Zai. Yusuf Zai was shot in the head for speaking out about girls education. Mir says the attempt was a message to journalists to keep them from speaking the truth but Mir says he will not deter. Protests continue in Cairo today as demonstrators gather to protest the decree that increases the powers of Egyptian president Muhammad Mercy. 370 people have been injured and one person has died since the decree was issued last Thursday. The protests have been largely peaceful but have escalated as demonstrators, mostly young men, threw stones at authorities today who responded with tear gas. Demonstrators has have also set fire to a car outside of Terrar Square. The ruling Islamist party tried to defuse the situation yesterday. With Merci supporting a compromise over his extended powers, they also cancelled their own protest that was scheduled for today but the moves could be too little too late as the crisis has already exposed the rift between the Islamists and the liberal opposition. Now we return home and join Becky Milden with sports. Hi Becky. Thanks Sarah. With the NHL lockout in full swing and Toronto sports in a lul, the Argos big win on Sunday has given the city something to cheer about. But are the new fans intruding on some already developed territory? Sydney Poulos has the report. After playing in front of small crowds all season, the Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup on Sunday in front of a sold out stadium. Fans came out in big numbers today to cheer on the double blue at the victory parade at Yonge and Wellington. And the Argos couldn't be happier for the support. [Music] The fans are great. I think now that we brought the Grey Cup home to Toronto we're going to have the best fans in the CFL. Sports fans are notorious for not accepting bandwagoners but Argos superfans like Tim O'brien are a little different. You know what there's always going to be bandwagon people at the end of any season for any sport and you know what they're just as welcome as the die hards. Might as well. Sarah for everybody as a former bandwagoner herself, Allison James hopes the win will promote higher attendance for next season. New friends now have been created because the last one is so amazing the play and everything I think most people who are skeptical probably not going to be on board for sure. There's no doubt about it, that the Toronto Argonauts big win on Sunday created a whole bunch of new fans. Luckily for the new fans, the old fans are welcoming them with open arms. For those who want to continue to follow Argonauts football, they can do so in the spring. For Toronto Today, I'm Sydney Poulos. The Argos have earned as much as 10 million in profit as the host of this year's Grey Cup. What made this year different is that the Argos and the CFL received 9.5 million dollars from the federal and provincial governments. The money was used to fund the Grey Cup celebrations around the city. Some experts say the money was well spent bringing in tourists and revenue. Previous hosts have earned between three and four million dollars. when the Argos last hosted the Grey Cup in 2007 they received two hundred thousand dollars from the province and nothing from from the federal government. More NHL lockout news today. The NHL and the NHL players association have agreed to allow mediators to guide future bargaining talks. Neither side is forced to go along with suggestions made by the mediators. The league and the union will meet separately with mediators tomorrow. The two sides have managed to agree on a 50 50 split of revenues but cannot agree on the amount of additional payments the league will need to make. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is wasting no time naming a coaching staff. Gibbons filled five of the positions yesterday. Pete Walker will serve as the pitching coach, Louis Riviera will move to third base and Dwayne Murphy will act as the first base and outfield coach. The two newcomers to the staff are Demarlo Hale as bench coach and Chad Mathola as hitting coach. The Jays still need to find a bullpen coach to replace Walker. Tonight the Raptors match up against against the Rockets in Houston. Tonight will be Kyle Lowry's homecoming to Houston after coming to Toronto. The team is looking for a win tonight to break their four-game losing streak. The Raptors are in second last place overall. More football action tonight at the Rogers Centre. Rob Ford is expected to coach the Don Bosco Eagles in the school's first metro bowl. The team will play the Huron Heights Warriors from Newmarket. The winner will be crowned the king of high school football in the GTA. That's it for sports, back to you Maria.-- Thanks. And now back to Mayor Rob Ford. With the possibility of an upcoming mayoral change the city has their opinions on what they think should happen next. While we don't know what's ahead for Toronto, people are hoping for a difference. Jamie Webster has the story. With mayor Rob Ford being removed from office, people are weighing in on what they want next. I would probably look for someone completely different than mayor Ford. I never really supported him in his career and his choices. Especially with the whole football thing and his own kind of agenda. I didn't kind of appreciate what he was doing so i'm definitely looking for someone more responsible who you know takes the fun seriously of Toronto. I guess I don't know. I didn't really have much of an opinion of Rob Ford. I just didn't really like him that much. I felt like he didn't , I don't know, didn't feel really taken care of by him. I think someone that cares about cyclists that can put in more bike lanes in the city. Someone who cares about people in lower income housing that isn't going to sell off public housing and someone who isn't Rob Ford. I'm glad he's gone. The city is hoping for someone who will focus their attention on transit, bike lanes, and other issues that Ford seem to have neglected. John Shields believes that the new mayor needs a change in attitude. And be more willing to communicate with the city. Well first of all I think the new mayor needs to be able to listen to people and take good advice and follow procedures. And rules I mean. I think the problem with the current mayor is that he's got the attitude that only he has the right answers. I think leadership over the next 10 years is going to be very critical in terms of the future of the city especially around issues of transit. Regardless of who the new mayor is one thinks for certain he or she is going to have to start listening to the people but for now the public is simply asking for a Ford free future. For Toronto Today, I'm Jamie Webster. He's the Grinch who stole two million dollars worth of donated toys. A man was charged on Monday after Salvation Army warehouses in North York and Brampton were raided by police and found toys missing. Christina Dunn has more. The discovery of more than two million dollars worth of stolen toys has led to an arrest former Salvation Army executive director. Mr David Rennie, 51 years of age of Toronto, has been charged with theft possession and breach of trust related offenses. Despite the incident the organization is planning to move forward. The ministry of this particular facility has gone uninhibited since the investigation took place. It's business as usual for the Salvation Army. Anyone in need this Christmas will be helped by the Salvation Army. Further arrests are anticipated in this ongoing investigation. For Toronto Today, I'm Christina Dunn. a united nations report has revealed that thawing permafrost covering almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere could speed up the rate of global warming. Permafrost contains large stores of frozen organic matter which is if thought and the release and released into the atmosphere will amplify current global warming causing higher temperatures. Around the world this discovery comes in the second day of negotiations with a focus on the Kyoto protocol which expires this year. Officials say that a 20 year old beauty queen is one of the confirmed killed in a gun shootout that took place in northern Mexico. The gun battle took place between soldiers an alleged gang of drug traffickers. Over the weekend the body of Maria Susanna Flores-Gomez was found at the scene Saturday. Officials say she was traveling with the drug traffickers but know if she had any involvement in the shootout. According to a report from an economic think tank, Europe's debt crisis is the biggest threat to the global economy. The Paris-based organization warns that if the current financial situation escalates, Europe and the US could be thrown into a deep recession spanning to the next two years. To prevent this from happening, the report urged Eurozone and US policymakers to make tackling their fiscal crisis a top priority. Now amidst all the news on Ford and the Argos there has been an unusual headline about the world's sexiest man. Reporter Jen Che has more. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was named sexiest man alive by the Onion. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this had to do a double take as I did. The Onion described 29 year old Kim as a heartthrob who was every woman's dream come true. According to the Onion, the hunk has a rare ability to be completely adorable and macho at the same time. Not only does he have impeccable fashion sense with a chic haircut, The leader is apparently masking an unmistakable cute and cuddly side. Of course this was meant to be funny. It showed up on the onion two weeks ago so how did it end up on my newsfeed this morning? Apparently the people's daily in China thought it was real. It ran a 55 page commemorating Kim's new title with photos. They even cited the Onions flattering quotes. The mere fact that people's daily China ran such a spread pretty much boggles my mind. I mean I understand that sexy can be very relative but did these reporters seriously believe Kim could beat out Ryan Gosling. To be fair my Korean grandmother describes Kim's plump physique as having much fortune so for those who are still in that ancient Asian culture mindset we should cut them some slack. Otherwise the closest resemblance to a sexy celebrity figure I could see none other than dancing devi Psy who could pass as not too far off from Ryan Gosling. The Onion calls itself America's finest news source. Probably not after north Koreans learn about satire. All in all, this incident is a great example of how internationally transferred news can get a little lost in translation. A new test to detect breast cancer is causing controversy across the country. The diagnostic test is called thermography. It uses a heat sensitive camera to take pictures of the body. A CBC news investigation has discovered that dozens of medical clinics across the country are offering the tests that experts are calling useless. The Canadian cancer society says that the test fails to test breast cancer and can generate false positives. Health Canada says that it's up to provinces to take action against clinics making misleading claims. The makers of Banana Boat sunscreen have announced that they are recalling more products. This new recall includes two continuous spray sunscreens, both of which have been recalled because they pose a fire risk according to Health Canada. The sunscreen can catch on fire and ignite a user's skin if not properly dried. A new statement from the department says that consumers should check their sunscreen products to see if they are affected by the recall. A new study from the Canadian medical association journal reveals that combining common drugs and grapefruit could cause overdose. The fruit has been found to suppress an important enzyme which reduces the absorption of the medication in the bloodstream. There's currently a list of 44 different commonly prescribed drugs that could cause kidney failure, respiratory failure, and even death when mixed with grape juice. A new study suggests that more money for early childhood development education could help the economy. The analysis released by TD economics say that for every dollar invested educating kids there would be more there would be three times the return. The increase in government spending would benefit children and allow parents to return to work between parental leave and their child starting kindergarten. However the report also notes that the investment probably won't happen anytime soon as most governments are struggling to balance their budgets. In entertainment news, there seems to be more controversy surrounding the hit show Two and a Half Men and no it doesn't involve Charlie Sheen. 19 year old Angus T. Jones who plays Jake on the CBS comedy is featured in a video posted by a Christian church. Slamming the show in the video jones calls the show filth and urges people not to watch it. Two and a Half Men. If you're watching man please stop watching tonight man. I'm on to Two and Half men and I don't want to be knowing it please stop watching it. Can you stop filling your head with filth. Jones has been on the show since he was 10 years old and all the stars have have contracts that run through the end of the season. It seems there's still a lot of Twitter chatter about Justin Bieber after he attended two events in the span of three days this past weekend. Bieber was first slammed for his rather sloppy ensemble when meeting the prime minister to receive a diamond jubilee medal and it only gets worse for the biebs. Football fans booed the singer's performance during the 100th Grey Cup halftime show on Sunday. Many people angrily took to twitter accusing him of lip-syncing. It seems that these days Canada is full of non-believers. And everyone seems to be a fan of Psy's hit single Gangnam style these days - even the most unsuspecting. A group of inmates in a Bangkok prison busted a move to a hit behind barbed wire and bars today. 70 inmates put on a show for the media and corrections department executives after after competing in a gangnam style dance contest last week. This is yet another party of the popular song which became the most watched youtube video ever. This month Psy will perform in Thailand tomorrow night. Now that the holiday season is in full swing we take a look at the tension between the commercial and fantastical elements of Christmas. At the middle of it all is the main man of both retailers and children at this time of year, Santa Claus. Is Saint Nick just a way to sell to frantic shoppers or is Santa an essential part of the magical holiday spirit? Nicole Brockbank has more with the story. The appearance of the Bay's Christmas window display is a sure sign that the holidays are underway in Toronto. Even though they're revealed in early November. [Music] The commercialization of Christmas is nothing new dating back at least as far as Toronto's first Santa Claus parade in 1905. That was run by Eaton's downtown department store. Now over a hundred years later the tradition carries on sponsored by other corporations with floats bearing their names. The parade may have changed but the anchor remains the same. Since his first trip up Yonge street, Santa Claus has been the icon of gift giving for Christmas. But why is it that Santa stayed with us despite his obvious commercialization. Ryerson marketing professor Helene Moore explains the Santa phenomenon. Santa the symbol for pleasure indulge like, have your your glass of wine in this case it's a glass of milk. But we represent like this is as an image for us as as consumers to to represent the indulgent you know side of life. Really related to what people do and like to do during the holidays. He's a big representation of that. I think. Radio Television Arts student Will Nowak is counting on that association. He's taking pictures of St. Nick to raise money for a children's tv show pilot. Novak isn't shy about the intention behind what he calls operation ho. We heard this was a very successful marketing approach in the past. Honestly plus we think it's fun to dress up. Look at this - we we love doing this sort of thing. We love dressing up. A chance to act and you know be you - know take take a couple hours and you know not be too serious and just you know just have a good time. Change your Facebook profile picture with Santa. Merry Christmas. I think we're right up there with Eaton Centre. If not better but Nowak isn't the only one playing Santa this early. Santa has to sit in malls for months now to take pictures. I was in Miami last weekend. He was there mid-November sitting in the mall. Though the modern Santa with his reindeer and elves, might drive sales, it's Santa's like Dennis Cheele that turn a shallow strategy into a genuine experience. As far as I'm concerned if you're going to portray Santa, do it right from head to toe. Do it right - hello. [Music] Have a good everybody! [Music] When a child looks at Santa they're very unforgiving because they first see Santa and then they see the suit. the person what you're saying How you're saying it and then the suit again, so if all the things don't properly mesh you're not Santa and children will let you know. And the last thing you want to do is destroy someone's dream of Santa? Does he eat all the cookies left out for Saint Nick. I think that Christmas ,the holiday period, is a period when people likes to you know, disconnect from the reality and Santa Claus is a magic man. So it all, everybody's happy to integrate that as part of their holiday season and you know selling that to the kid and the dreaming factor and the fact that we need to disconnect from this crazy world nowadays that we keep him alive. For Chill Santa's not just for kids last year he visited a senior's home where his presence made a difference. There was one gentleman that just kind of that attitude. I said George church, church sit down, sit down. And the staff kind of went when I touched him he sat down and said started talking. If you heard me doing how are things going. What are you looking at for Christmas? Staff kind of looked like, oh what's going on and then he started talking and a couple of the staff were like okay what do you want for Christmas? Well I don't really know because... okay well I'll try to bring you something nice. But we'll have a present for you - don't you worry. The nurse was like, this which meant nap time. So George, where you go I know you have to go to your room. You've got things to do thank you very much for talking with me. And he says bye-bye Santa. Haven't saw in a long time. and all the nurses were just wide-eyed. I found out later that I was the first person that he had spoken to in several years and the main reason was you're not talking to a person talking to an idea, a concept a spirit, that he could remember when he was younger that brought him things and did something worthwhile. I had to sit down after they told me that. [Music] As long as retailers use Santa as a marketing tool, people will continue to connect him with a commercial Christmas. However this tool only works because of individuals like Dennis Cheele who allow all of us to forget the man and remember the magic at this time of year. For Toronto Today, I'm Nicole Brockbank, happy holidays. The New York Times released its book list for the 100 most notable books of the 2012. Today its non-fiction picks for this year indicate a fascination with America's first family with a biography of president Barack Obama nnd two books on the first lady the list. Includes both fiction and non-fiction titles and comes out just in time for the holiday season. And that's it for Toronto Today. I'm Sarah Warren and I'm Maria Asaf and thanks for tuning in for our very last newscast of the semester. We hope you enjoyed it. Take care and happy holidays. [Applause]
